Ventilation: Your Shut Doors Could Be Costing You Money!

Believe it or not, keeping a door open just as I have done could save you money. The reason being is if the door is shut, it is being excluded from the rest of the house. That room could potentially have a 5-10 degree difference than the rest of the house! They may have their own supply and return but by shutting that door and keeping it shut, that will limit ventilation from other parts of the house. If you have a colder room, try keeping the door open for a bit longer.

Thanks and have a great day!

  1. This is true. Another thing that would help is if the HVAC contractor had done a load calculation on these homes and had installed equipment that was sized correctly for the load. I have found that my furnace is actually double the correct size. My A/C is 4 tons and should have been 3 tons. When equipment is correctly sized it runs longer and helps even out the temps throughout the home. A system that runs 5-10 minutes and shuts off is neither comfortable nor efficient. It also lasts longer. A load calculation is actually required by IRC but is not enforced in Omaha. Buyer beware.
